Embracing Change for Success

In 2018, the Amsterdam Medical Center (AMC) and the VU University Medical Center (VUmc) continued under a single name, Amsterdam University Medical Centers (Amsterdam UMC), creating the largest academic medical center in the Netherlands. In the following years, departments, research teams, and medical teams at both locations have been working towards fully integrating and centralizing care and operations at one location or the other (AMC or VUmc).

By joining forces, combining specialists, and centralizing expertise, Amsterdam UMC aims to provide highly personalized and specialized care while supercharging research and education to facilitate the next key advancements.

SECTION: CLINICAL GENETICS Outpatient Clinic

After a few years of intensive preparation, the Outpatient Clinic of the Section Clinical Genetics was fully integrated and centralized at one location in July 2022. This represents a great milestone regarding the integration of the Department of Human Genetics within the new organizational structure of Amsterdam UMC. Now, all employees of the section Clinical Genetics can collaborate in one place, eliminating the need for patients to travel between different locations. The new and beautiful location (AMC B-0) provides a really inviting setting for visitors and professionals.

“The department is extremely proud of the enormous effort and flexibility shown by the staff before, during, and after the move.” Rogier Postma, Manager of Operations, Department of Human Genetics.

One location for all patients with hereditary diseases

Before the move, the Section Clinical Genetics was spread over four locations: three at AMC and one at VUmc. This caused many logistical challenges and made it difficult to work together optimally as one integrated team.
The new location offers workplaces for medical specialists, medical residents, physician assistants, interns, researchers, physician assistants, genetic counselors, social workers, case managers, outpatient secretaries, genealogy staff, the quality advisor, the project officer, staff secretary, and section leaders. There is a spacious waiting room, six consultation rooms (with more planned), multi-purpose shared rooms, a conference room, a large lunchroom, and a beautiful cinema meeting room with large screens for onsite/offsite discussions. After completion, call rooms will also be available for telephone and video consultations with patients.

Thrilled and Proud

Both the staff of the Clinical Genetics Section and the department management are thrilled with the outcome of this lengthy but ultimately inspiring process.
